Waste 2 Taste envisions a world where no one goes hungry and reduced food waste to zero. Waste 2 Taste connects people to places with surplus food through a donation sharing app. Our goal is to create hunger-free communities free from food waste creating sustainable futures for people and the environment in their community.
Hunger is a critical issue affecting millions worldwide. Globally, approximately 828 million people face hunger, lacking access to sufficient nutritious food. In the United States, the challenge persists, with over 34 million people, including 9 million children, living in food-insecure households. Zooming into Maryland, nearly 9% of the population struggles with food insecurity, translating to about 1 in 11 individuals not knowing where their next meal will come from. The situation intensifies in Baltimore, where over 20% of residents face food insecurity, significantly higher than the national average. These stark figures underscore the urgent need for innovative solutions like "Waste 2 Taste," aiming to connect surplus food with those in need, making strides toward reducing hunger at every level, from our local communities in Baltimore and Maryland to the broader national and global stage.
Food waste is a colossal challenge with far-reaching implications. Globally, around 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted each year, contributing to unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions and squandering precious resources. In the United States, food waste reaches approximately 40% of the total food produced, equivalent to 108 billion pounds annually, making it one of the largest contributors to landfill and a significant source of methane emissions. Maryland is not immune to this issue, with estimates suggesting that residents waste over 900,000 tons of food each year, reflecting the urgent need for strategic intervention. The situation in Baltimore mirrors this critical issue, as the city grapples with both high rates of food insecurity and food waste. Initiatives like "Waste 2 Taste" are pivotal, aiming to bridge the gap by redirecting surplus food from potential waste to those in need within communities, turning the tide against food waste from Baltimore to Maryland, across the U.S., and around the globe.
